Google’s Off-Shore Data Center

Back in 2008, Google filled a patent for a ship that would be used as a data center. The servers would be powered and cooled by the ocean, therefore making it very eco-friendly. There had been no word on this patent or if it was a possible project in the works since, but as of lately, there has been massive speculation that the first offshore data center will go active in the recent months. What brings this patent back to the public eye is recent evidence pointing the tech giant to activities being conducted at “Building 3” on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. There is belief that a four story building is being built on a barge inside “Building 3”. What makes this even more interesting is that a similar building on a barge was towed into port in Portland, Maine about two weeks ago. Both barges are contracted by the company behind what is going on at “Building 3”. What makes this a good project for both Mother Nature and Google is that this project would cut millions from Google’s data storage costs and reduce pollution. Unfortunately, this means that if the government would need to access data on the ships, it would be a no-go if the ships were set to be in international waters. This situation would prove interesting on a civil and political standpoint.

Apple October 22, 2013 Rumors

Apple has yet another event where, according to their invitation, they have “a lot to cover”. You feel the cold chills? We did too. What could this mean? Well, they’re not gonna release the iPhone 6 that’s for sure. It is expected tho that they will release one of the following will be mentioned:

-First off, lets cover the large iPad. Last year, it got LTE support and upgraded Wi-Fi, as well as the A6 processor. This year we can most definitely expect the A7 processor from the iPhone 5S, improved retina display and touch, and a rumored new case(rubber padding or grip?), and last but not least, a larger screen. What would be very nice to see is the new Wi-Fi standard, 802.11 AC. We may even see a “champagne” colored iPad, as well as for the iPad Mini.

-Second off, the iPad Mini. Like it’s big brother, it is expected that the same features will be added to the little guy.

-OS X is expected to have the release of it’s next version as well as other new updates to the OS, and possibly even new features.

-MacBook Pro is expected to have it’s next version released with the usual “thinner, faster, stronger” line. It is quite possible to see it boasting the new i3-i7 processors from Intel, more RAM options, and probably a remote control option for iPhones/iPads to make the feature work smoother with the possible new OS X and iOS7.

-Although this is the biggest rumor of them all, the iWatch is expected to be released in this event. While this is a long shot, it is unlikely that it will appear. Most Apple enthusiasts wish it will be during this announcement but we can most likely expect it to see it in 2014 either at CES2014 or one of Apple’s events.

-AppleTV is also rumored to be discussed in this coming event. We can expect updates to the service, some minor tweaks, as well as features.

This is all the rumors we were able to dig out from the internet and we hope that many of them to become actual in this release. While these are just rumors, iPads and MacBooks are a shoe-in to be discussed in the event. For anything else, we just have to wait until the event. Stay tuned for our post October 22nd/23rd with our in-house breakdown of the event!

Google’s Stocks Close at $1000

On Firday, Google had a record breaking stock price. It ended the day with the record of $1,011 per stock, which is 112% up. This means that is you are the proud owner of stock in Google, you are now in a very nice position. But you may ask, what does this mean for the CEO’s?
The shocking fact for the CEO’s is that from Thursday to Friday, they became a whopping $3 billion richer. To be more exact, Larry Page ended his Friday with $3 billion in his pocket, and Sergey Brin with $2.93 billion, according to Forbes Real-Time Billionaire’s Index. This gives Page a top net worth of $24.9 billion and Brin one of $24.4 billion.

eBay Now Coming to London

eBay announced plans earlier this week that it will start rolling out its eBay Now same-day delivery service in London,England. The pilot program is scheduled to begin in 2014 in partnership with Argos, a UK-based retailer. This announcement is eBay Now’s first step into the international market after the program was released last year in New York and San Francisco. The Argos partnership will mean that the retailer will adopt eBay’s “Click and Collect” program on a trial basis and we can this spread to over 150 locations in the UK. This means that in those 150+ locations, like in the US, people will be able to eBay items and pick them up at local Argos outlets. For now, eBay says that this program will start off with 50 merchants in the UK and will expand as needed.
Although this might seem new, this new delivery program has been seen before, most notably by Amazon with its’ own same-day delivery and locker pick-up service which is available in both the US and UK. Google has also started to experiment with this idea, but only in San Francisco for the time being. all three companies have even made their own apps so you can buy on-the-go and eBay has also released the eBay Now app for android and iOS and are available for download and use.

Google to Sell Facebook Ads

“The end is upon us my friends! Google will sell Facebook ads!”

That is the overall reaction of the internet on this issue. While most think that this is a very bad idea for the public, for Google and Facebook, this is quite beneficial, and interesting as well. Google and Facebook have had quite a rivalry over the years and with this announcement it is leading many to believe that they might be coming to terms with one another.
The announcement came on Friday, where Google stated that its DoubleClick unit will soon be able to buy inventory on Facebook Exchange via DoubleClick’s Bid Manager. What is interesting is that Facebook Exchange’s retargeted ads analyze a users behaviour outside of Facebook, with the aim to provide richer, and less spam-like adds to your stream so you can see ads based on things you like or are interested in.
While it is not completely clear why these two tech giants decided to team up, but this partnership will definitely help out both companies. The mere fact that the online advertising industry’s powerhouse, DoubleClick, and Facebook Exchange’s enticing offering for ad buyers will make this an interesting time for Facebook and its one billion+ users.

Botnet Steals Over a Million Social Security Numbers

If you live in the US and are a citizen, you know exactly what Social Security is and you know by heart your number. Unfortunately, this system comes under attack on a personal basis and the effected person usually deals with credit card fraud or worse. Now, there has been a shocking discovery that a botnet managed to steal social security numbers and other important information of over a million Americans, including artists, political figures, and even directors of top US agencies.
This shocking news prompted multiple government agencies to open an investigation looking into this matter. According to recent discoveries, a website called was stealing info from LexisNexis servers and two other companies that specialize in background checks. With this, hackers were able to steal 3.1 million diverse records. The worst part is that the malware used had no problem evading even the top-of-the-line anti-virus security systems. There is no report on who these hackers are, but the FBI is expected to comment on this issue in the following weeks
